What to Consider When Redesigning Your Logo
Blog | LeMay Consulting
A logo is a symbol and design that is used by an organization to identify its brand of products, merchandise, group of people, etc. There are many elements that are curated and thought through when thinking of the final logo design.
When redesigning a logo, you will want to consider your previous or current logo, what it looks like, and what changes you would like to make to it. Although you are changing the design, it’s important to keep the new design relevant and true to the company’s values. You may want to alter the typeface you are using or the actual text of the logo. Typefaces can make or break but also signify who a company is. A secondary typeface is also something you may want to think about.
Lastly, consider how the new color palette will impact and represent the organization. You may not think much of your color palette but colors have their own meaning and importance to certain cultures, people, places and can correlate to what your product might be.
The final results of your logo designs should consist of a primary logo and a secondary or alternative logo. Typically one of these logos is vertical while the other is horizontal. Having a sub mark which is a simplified condensed logo is best for business cards, social media posts, and footers on a website. The last important logo to have is a favicon, which is a symbol or maybe letter of the brand’s initials. This is best to have in one solid color used in print and digital.
Best Software for Designing a Logo
Although there are many options to create a logo, some of the best illustration software include Adobe Illustrator and Affinity Designer, which require a high level of development and skill. They are used by many graphic creators in the industry. Canva is an easy alternative option to creating a high quality and polished look. This software is intuitive and best used for someone who might not have the time or skill for Adobe Illustrator.
How to Save and Export a Logo File
Once you have finalized a logo design you are happy with, make sure to export and use each file in a specific way. For example, if you have created your logo in Adobe Illustrator, first save the file as a .ai so that you have the original and can make changes in the future.
The three main files you should save once you have finalized the design are PNG, JPG, and ESP files. Your PNG logo is best used on your website, social media posts, website icon button, or whenever you need a logo with a transparent background. A JPG file is also very common. This type of file usually loads fast and is smaller in size. It is great to use on email templates, but should not be used for print. An esp file is a large editable file that can be scaled to any size. ESP files maintain a high resolution and are the best output for printing.
